Evaluation 7

Looking back at my preliminary task, what I you feel I have learnt from the progression from it to full product?

I feel I have learned a lot from preliminary to final since my group and I took the preliminary way too seriously and thought it was the final project or something so we have definitely learnt to listen next time. There is so much I have learned in regards to filming and editing. I did not know how to trim a piece of video when we edited the preliminary task and I didn't know how to add additional sound or use fade-ins and outs. Since then, the final ask went great. Some parts a little rough around the edges but it is a vast improvement on what was the preliminary. In the shot above, you can see a close-up camera shot of Mr. Vicini circling a house (final) and the man walking to the table while the personas hand is closest to the camera (preliminary). Technically are both close-ups only the preliminary has something going on behind it in the background. You can see in the final how my group and I experimented with high angles and low angles.

The preliminary task and the final changed a lot in terms of location as well as props and costume. We had access to the school for the preliminary but with the final, we could film anywhere which gave us more options in terms of plot and genre. The shot above shows two full body shots, one from the final and one from the preliminary ask. A lot of our shots are related between the two and our costume for the main character was similar too, just smartly dressed.

Another two full shots... Harry was acting in the final so it was easier to film since the preliminary had just me acting both roles...

This is the big one; these are an example of match on action used within our projects. The one on the left shows Mr. Vicini taking out the bin bag of bodies while the one on the right shows the man walking over to the table and sitting down. Match on action really helped the flow of each video and fitted in well with what we were trying to do. You can see how we got the idea of using it from the preliminary task but we ever used shot/reverse shot since there is no speech in the final task. If I could go back, I would fit something in like that.

I carried a lot of my knowledge over from preliminary to final and see the preliminary as more of an experiment now. An experiment in which I have learned from and will always do so in the future. Next time, I will include more of the brief for the preliminary within my final.

Evaluation 6

What have I learnt about technologies from the process of costructing this product?

I have learned to use many things while creating this product but the one that I believe I have learned from the most is Adobe Premiere Elements 8.0. I used this programme to edit most of the videos on my blog, the preliminary task and the final. It really is one of the best programmes I've seen for doing something like this and would recommend it if anyone was making a small-time movie or something. I'm sure there are fancier systems out there to use with more stuff but this covers the basics and after you figure it all out is really easy to pick up.

Of course a video camera was needed to film the project and I have learnt a fair bit about filming with it too. Not so much technology but all the shots possible and the add-ons to the camera like dolly's and tri-pods. I still think I need to look more into the effects and gadgets of the camera but I believe I have learnt more than I ever did when it comes to filming with them.

For a lot of shots, my group used a tri-pod. This is very handy since it allows you to film something without having to hold the camera at all and it keeps it firm in place and steady. I already knew about tri-pods but never have used one so that was an experience ad it seems like a good piece of equipment to have when filming. I will definitely be using one if I ever have to film something again.

For part of the project, my group and I used a camera phone to take pictures of what we were doing. From animatics to editing and preliminarys to finals, they were all documeted on a phone which is a handy tool on set of a film, something I have picked up.

This is a weird one but I believe I have really extended my knowledge of the world of YouTube during this project. I had no idea on half the stuff you could do with it. I have learnt how to annotate something and how to embed YouTube videos to my blog. It has opened my mind a bit more into what the internet is capable of when it comes to filming a project and how much good stuff is available to you when filming.

Evaluation 4

Media product target audience

The target audience for my media product would be somewhere in the age of 14-17. This is why we have rated our video as 15 as it seems to be the suitable age. Our media product contains scenes that younger viewers may not understand and a lot of fear in the fact that the plot could be real and so could the killer as he seems like a normal everyday person. The killer could easily b related as someone’s dad and so the audience would find this quit scary.
We have chosen this age group as it is the ‘coming of age’ stage of life where teenagers adolescent into adults and so we wanted to open their minds more into the reality of horror rather than another fictional story. A psychological slasher horror such as ours is one that would be hard to follow if not focussed on it properly. We relate it a lot to Dexter and The Stepfather which seem to be based on the same age.
We imagine our target audience looking a lot like the image above, casual dressed  and rather chilled about life, possibly thinking about his future and his options and how everything he does now affects hi future life. You could say that the use of Malcolm could represent children and they could relate top when they were a kid or if thy know kids like younger relatives.

Evaluation 1

In what ways does my media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

VICINI both challenged and presented convention of horror films throughout the opening sequence. You ever actually see Mr. Vicini's face until later on in the opening and we wanted to produce a sense of mystery and fear of the unknown. We wanted the audience to be asking 'what is he doing?' and 'why is he doing it?' Our camera shots were placed so that his face is not seen within the first minute of filming and you can only see his actions of crossing out houses and chopping carrots. Also, when he chops the carrots, we wanted to make it seem violent like he was hacking at a body part or something. We derived this from the opening of Dexter, in which he does every day normal things but does them very violently (like tying his shoes as if he was strangling someone. This was basically the whole jist of our film, to make someone who seems like a normal person, murderous and evil.

Despite VICINI's horror background, we went completely against the horror genre half way through by replacing the tension music with comical music to make the scene seem funny now that he has killed Malcolm. This is challenging a convention since people we show something like killing someone as comical and funny where as it would normally by horrible and vile. We wanted to make it seem scary as well on how he just does it so casually and out of the blue, like he could strike at any moment. The use of a small child as well is a big convention in horror. People care about kids and don't want kids o be bought into the harsh world of adults, the bad side of it anyway. That's why, for example, there are no children found in Grand Theft Auto. The use of the boy Malcolm as the first person you see being murdered was made intently on making the audience feel uncomfortable as that could be their child or a child they know but we hide how brutal it is up with the comical side of it.

One of the main props of VICINI was the butcher's knife in which Mr. Vicini uses to cut carrots. Like I said before, he does tis rather violently and uses a butchers knife (which is use to cut meat) to cut a carrot. We wanted the audience to think why he is using such a big knife and then link it to him being a bloody murder who chops up bodies and so on. Knifes are always a huge convention in horror movies. Used by slashers and even victims in their time of need. This is because knives are scarier, guns are quick and the kill doesn't last long but knives are just that more gory and you can do more with them, making the person die slowly would make the audience feel uncomfortable... I mean who honestly wants to see someone bleed to death from 7 stabs to the stomach or hacked to death by an axe, not me.

To link in with the knife and death and so on, we used an arm of a dead body to represent that someone is dead inside the in bag. We used Harry's real arm to do this so it looked more realistic and this shows the audience what the fuss is about the bag and why he gets rid of it so quickly. A body in a bag is a usual thing seen  in horror films. The whole 'treating humans like rubbish' symbolism like in The Lovely Bones when she is put into a black bag and then locked into a safe.

Overall, we wanted to create a horror movie that would play around with the audiences head through false convention and mystery. We tried not to reveal everything too quickly so that it would keep the audience watching and keep guessing on what's going to happen. If we did a whole movie, which we can't, we would probably stick to the same thing and not reveal everything about Mr. Vicini until the very end. Cliff hangers are always good conventions in horror movies anyway, the character moments from death then bam! Film ends. We wanted to show he was a killer who kills like he is washing the dishes or something, just normal behaviour.

Storyboard Changes

We had a few storyboard changes within the making of the VICINI. We were originally going to have a poser of a missing cat at the start and then after Malcolm has been killed, a poster of a missing boy. We got rid of this due to supplies and time we had. We were also going to have Mr. Vicini moving into the house at the start but we had no access to a car and it would have been way over our time limit for how long the opening could be. I am satisfied however wit what we have made and believe it couldn't have gone better in terms of storyboarding.

VICINI Storyboard

The following are pictures of our storyboard for the VICINI video. Each square was drawn by myself and then edited by my group. Overall there are around 60 squares...

The storyboards were easy to produce as we had an effective way of creating them. We spent a lot of time rearranging them to fit our product needs...

This is a copy of the original storyboard for the opening titles of VICINI created by Harry and I. We used these in our pitch (please excuse my face)

VICINI Costume idea

This man is the kind of image we are going for in our VICINI production for the character of Mr. Vicini. He will be smartly dressed and well groomed and will be wearing a white shirt with a black tie and trousers and a simple belt. We chose this costume because it is smart and give off the impression that that character takes care of himself. He will also be wearing a pair of glasses and have slick ack hair. Overall, we wanted to produce an image of an everyday casual man who looks like he could do no harm but still have a creepy feel to him.

Prop Analysis

In this scene from The Innkeepers, a womea is taking out a bin bag with some struggle and she seems nervous about it. This could imply there is something she doesn't want people to know about in the bag. In our VICINI opening, we are going to use bin bags as they are an everyday household object but in the clip, they will have bodies in which is considered horrific in a way that humans can be treated as if they were trash...
This famous picture from the film Texas Chainsaw Massacre is of Leatherface running after the escapees at the end of the film with his chainsaw raised. We see a chainsaw as a rather brutal object that could inflict pain and so find this scary that the villain uses one...
This is a fake arm from a horror scene on You Tube (the name was foreign and not written in English so I can't type it). The idea of parts of the body coming off makes us feel less like a human and we fear the loss of limbs. Also, the use of blood makes us cringe since we know blood should be in the body. We will be using a bloody arm in our VICINI opening...
